After you do the time for the crime should you not be allowed to vote?
Florida’s Governor, Rick Scott, is drawing fire from critics after imposing a change to the voting rights of convicted felons. The change, which was imposed by Scott and the Florida cabinet, imposes a waiting period for when a person can vote after completing their sentence.
The new waiting period is five years for a non-violent offender and seven years for violent ones. Additionally, violent offenders will also be required to go before a clemency board, and show they are willing to abide by the rule of law before their voting rights are restored.
The NAACP Vice Chairman, Dale Landry, says that this is an unfair, extra penalty, which is being imposed on someone after they have already paid their debt to society. It will be interesting to hear the response Rick Scott has to this criticism.
